Irish-American Soda Bread

3/4 cup sugar
1/2 cup ( 1 stick) butter,softened
1 egg
3 cup's flour
1/4 tsp. baking soda
1 Tbsp. baking powder
1/4 tsp. salt
1 1/4 cup buttermilk
1 1/2 cup raisins

Preheat oven to 350 F. Grease and flour 9+5 inch loaf pan.
Cream sugar and butter and egg , add untill well blended.   In a separate bowl,  combine flour, baking soda,  baking powder and salt and gradually add to creamed butter mixture.
Mix well.   Mixture will resemble coarse cornmeal.   Stir in buttermilk until blended.   Stir in raisins.
Dough will be very sticky.

Spread evenly into the loaf pan and cut a bold slice across top of loaf lengthwise.
Bake for 1 hour,untill lightly browned. Depending on your oven, check bread in 30 min to 45 min. If bread is getting to dark ,cover top of bread with aluminum foil and continue to bake for the full hour.
